The high road from the coast
is a highwayman's dream
layers of black on black; sea, hills, sky
sooty clouds masking fading moon
frozen silhouettes of rock and tree
caught in passing headights
a coalface of night
winter's teeth bites
and bites again

The sky is light dove grey. 
Not just light but light - 
lifting winter off the earth. 
Taking the strain for the snowdrops 
to lift their heads 
and nod at the moon resting 
on tattered feathers of cloud.
